Event Details

Join AmCham Singapore and Emily Drew, three-time Emmy-winning journalist and professor at Davidson College where she teaches about the spread of misinformation and disinformation, specifically in relation to U.S. elections, democracy, and foreign policy. Her field work has included presidential campaigns, domestic and overseas terrorist attacks, mass shootings, natural disasters, journalism's role in democracy, and the impact of artificial intelligence on journalism.

During this session, Emily will speak on misinformation and disinformation on the campaign trail, the changing role of social media in elections, and how 3rd/4th/5th party candidates are covered in the United States' media. She will also share her insights on her field experience covering the last two U.S. elections as well as her thoughts on the current U.S. election.

Emily Drew is the James K. Batten Professor of English and teach television news producing, journalism, and media literacy. Since graduating from Davidson in 2004, she's worked as a journalist at print and television news outlets including The Taipei Times, China Central Television, Al Jazeera America, NBC News & MSNBC, VICE News, and ABC News.

Emily has three Emmy Awards: for investigating the Flint water crisis, for covering the George Floyd protests, and for delivering the "Best Overall Newscast" in 2020.

Her field producing work has included domestic and overseas terrorist attacks, mass shootings, natural disasters, and presidential campaigns. She's also worked as a breaking news control room producer, script writer and editor, booking producer, and on-air reporter.

Emily grew up on a farm in Sandy Lake, Pennsylvania, and have lived in Taiwan, Denmark, the Netherlands, the U.K., Cleveland, Washington D.C., and New York City.

Max Abbott is an Associate Managing Director and leads Nardello & Co.’s Political Risk Strategic Intelligence practice for the Asia-Pacific region. Based in Asia for the past decade, he also plays a key role in the firm’s litigation & arbitration support, criminal defense, and anti-corruption due diligence investigations.

A lawyer by training, Max has a background in international law, development, and government relations. He has conducted complex investigations in over a dozen jurisdictions across APAC, working collaboratively with global and regional law firms, multinational corporations, financial institutions and intergovernmental organizations. Max has developed particular expertise helping clients navigate the political risks associated with permitting and licensing, forming joint ventures with local partners, and identifying hidden government interests in private corporations

Prior to joining Nardello & Co., Max was Head of Business Intelligence for Asia at a global investigations firm based in Hong Kong, where he was responsible for project management and business development. Earlier in his career, Max lived in Jakarta, Indonesia for six years. He was a Senior Associate with Vriens & Partners, a Southeast Asian government affairs consultancy, where he frequently engaged with Indonesian politicians and regulators while managing relationships with foreign investors looking to enter Indonesia’s energy, technology and manufacturing sectors. Max was also a Law & Policy Consultant for the Open Society Foundations, helping administer capacity development grants to Southeast Asia NGOs in the legal sector and performing research on access to justice.
