An essential part of modern life, semiconductors – otherwise known as integrated circuits or (ICs) or microchips – now underpin everything from household appliances and automobiles to the most advanced supercomputers, AI applications, and weapons systems.

The global semiconductor ecosystem—from the upstream semiconductor manufacturing equipment (SME) suppliers, through the chip designers, foundries, and assembly/testing facilities that make them, to the downstream end-users—face supply chain disruptions from the pandemic, regulatory obstacles arising from the Russia-Ukraine war and the "trade and technology" rivalry between the U.S. and China, and the inherent challenges of designing faster and smaller devices to drive innovation across industries.

Our panel of experts will explore the interlocking technological, commercial, regulatory, and political factors impacting the semiconductor industry's future in Southeast Asia and worldwide.

Nate focuses on internal investigations, regulatory proceedings, compliance counseling, and disputes involving antitrust and competition, fraud and corruption, and international trade policy. He relocated from Washington, D.C. to Asia in 2004 in response to escalating enforcement of the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and domestic antitrust laws across the region.

He practiced in Beijing for 8 years through 2012, and now covers the region from DLA Piper’s Singapore office. He has advised conducted investigations throughout Asia, and he regularly advises clients on antitrust and compliance aspects of complex transactions in the region. He is experienced with the specific regulatory risks of diverse industries in Asia, including the technology, media, telecommunications, semiconductor, life sciences, oil and gas, mining, aviation, heavy manufacturing, and retail sectors.

Nate frequently publishes and speaks on competition, corruption, and trade policy issues in Asia, and co-authored the China chapter of the ABA treatise on Competition Laws Outside of the United States.

Nate is graduate of Harvard Law School and the University of Virginia. He was actively involved in legal policy issues at the American Chamber of Commerce in China, serving as Legal Committee Chairman in 2008 and as General Counsel from 2009 through 2011.

Olivia Koentjoro is Senior Director IP and Head of the Intellectual Property Analytics Center of Excellence at Applied Materials. She enables data-driven integrated business strategies and decision making by leveraging data science, artificial intelligence techniques and advanced intellectual property analytics to drive scalable analysis for the company.

Olivia Koentjoro has over 15 years of experience in the IP industry starting her career as a Patent Examiner at both the Canadian Intellectual Property Office and the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore responsible for assessing patentability of patent applications, then moving on to quality management and training leadership positions.

With a Doctorate in chemistry from the University of Durham (UK), a Masters in Project Management from the University of Adelaide (Australia) and a passion in promoting STEM, empowering women and creating inclusive and equitable workplaces, Olivia Koentjoro is the Executive Sponsor for the Southeast Asia Women’s Professional Development Network at Applied Materials, Careers and Industry Mentor for the University of Adelaide and the University of Durham and serves on the Licensing Executives Society International (LESI) Chemicals, Environment, Energy, and Materials Committee.
