The next in the AmChams of Asia Pacific Virtual Doork Knock series will provide an update on the legislation and regulation being contemplated for Artificial Intelligence.

While Congress missed critical windows to install guardrails for the internet and social media, it will likely make that mistake with AI.

What is Congress concerned about? How might it legislate? What will the Biden Administration undertake to regulate AI under executive authority? And how might countries in Asia do the same based on past experience in the digital economy.

Dr. Deborah Elms is the Founder and Executive Director of the Asia Trade Centre (ATC) and the President of the Asia Business Trade Association (ABTA).

Concurrently, she is a member of APCO's International Advisory Council, the G20 Trade and Investment Research Network, and the Advisory Board of the Trade and Investment Negotiation Adviser (TINA) at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP).

Dr. Elms has extensive experience working with governments, international organizations, and businesses and is one of the leading experts on trade policy in the region. She was also active in her past leadership posts in international trade groups having served on the Trade and Investment Council of the World Economic Forum (WEF) from 2017 to 2019, the International Technical Advisory Committee of the Global Trade Professionals Alliance (GTPA), as well as being the chair of its Working Group on Trade Policy and Law.

Prior to her current role, Dr. Elms was head of the Temasek Foundation Centre for Trade and Negotiations and Senior Fellow of International Political Economy at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

Dr. Elms received a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Washington, an MA in international relations from the University of Southern California, and bachelor's degrees from Boston University. Dr. Elms frequently appears in the media to provide expert analysis on trade issues in the region and publishes the Talking Trade Blog.

With over two decades experience in public policy, business and the law, Bruce helps leaders and organizations understand, anticipate and navigate political risk.

Mehlman is a highly sought-after keynote speaker on policy and political trends, regularly headlining business conferences and strategic planning sessions. His quarterly infographic analyses are consistently picked-up by national media and eagerly consumed by tens of thousands of readers around the world. Television networks such as CNBC, Fox News, Fox Business and Hearst often ask Bruce to appear to discuss trends and their implications.

Bruce previously served as Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Technology Policy under President George W. Bush. He also worked as a senior leadership aide in the House of Representatives, general counsel to a national political party committee and policy counsel to Cisco Systems.

Bruce is widely-regarded as an expert in running coalitions, quarterbacking issue campaigns and managing C-suite associations, bringing innovative approaches and determined execution to achieve impactful outcomes. An Adjunct Professor and Board Member of The Washington Campus, Bruce frequently lectures MBA candidates on “effective business-government relations.” Bruce serves on the advisory boards of start-up companies including FiscalNote, iLearningEngines, and Virtru, in addition to serving on the Boards of the Center for Democracy & Technology, The Washington Campus and the State Science & Technology Institute.

Bruce received a BA degree from Princeton University and a JD from the University of Virginia Law School where he served on the Virginia Law Review.

Steven Okun’s thirty-year career in public affairs includes leadership positions in government, business and industry associations.

Since 2017, he serves as a Senior Advisor to global geostrategic consultancy McLarty Associates working with multinational clients across the region. As KKR’s first Director of Asia Public Affairs from 2011-2017, his responsibilities encompassed government affairs, communications, stakeholder engagement, and sustainability. From 2003-2010, he created and led Asia public affairs for global logistics firm UPS.

Steve serves as Chair of the AmChams of Asia Pacific, the umbrella organization of American Chambers of Commerce that promotes trade and investment between the region and the United States and previously served four terms as a Governor for AmCham Singapore, including being elected three times as Chair.

Awarded a Special Service Commendation in the Clinton Administration, Steven served as Deputy General Counsel at the US Department of Transportation from 1994-1999.

A frequent analyst for global media, he also authors regular commentary and is the featured guest on Singapore’s MONEY FM International News Review.

A sought-after expert, he speaks frequently to businesses, investor groups, at universities and conferences across the region.

He received his B.A. from the University of Virginia and his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law.
