Event Details

Based on a career in foreign and national security policy, Ambassador Ford Hart will explore contemporary geopolitics in the Indo-Pacific. In particular, he will discuss the state of the rules-based international order. Hart will attempt to flesh out the nature of the order and highlight its practical considerations, especially in the maritime dimension, in an era of increasing power politics in the region.

Join AmCham and the Navy League for a Sea Power seminar featuring Ambassador Hart, a former career U.S. diplomat. Hart served as the China Director on the National Security Council staff and diplomatic advisor to the Chief of Naval Operations. He had four assignments in the People's Republic of China, retiring as Chief of Mission in Hong Kong and Macau. President Obama appointed Hart Special Envoy for the Six-Party Talks on North Korean nuclear weapons.

Charlie Brown is Lead Associate in Singapore, with Booz Allen Hamilton, and is currently MDA Advisor to the US Pacific Fleet. His areas of expertise are Maritime Security Capacity Building, Maritime Domain Awareness, and in-depth knowledge of the maritime industry, commercial shipping & logistics systems.

Prior to this role, he served as a US civil servant at the US Navy's Military Sealift Command Far East, in Singapore, in the roles of Strategic Plans Officer and Operational Support Officer (OSO).

While on Active Duty in the US Navy, he was a Supply Officer in the US Navy serving on the Submarine USS Honolulu (SSN-718), and later the Combat Logistics Officer at COMLOG WESTPAC in Singapore, from 2001-2003.

As a Naval Reservist, he attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander, and his last assignment was in support of Military Sealift Command Far East, on the team that established the office in Sembawang, when the command was moved from Yokohama, Japan, to Singapore.
Charlie studied Science & Technology Studies at Cornell University, in Ithaca, NY.
In his free time, Charlie belongs to several volunteer organizations, including YCAPS, serving on the ExCo and helping to grow the network in Singapore and Southeast Asia.

He has also been an active and contributing member of the Navy League of the United States (Singapore Council) since 2003. During that time, he served as the Council’s Treasurer & Vice President, and assumed the position of the President of the Singapore Council in July 2021.

Ford Hart helped administer U.S. China policy at the White House, the State Department, the Pentagon, and in Greater China over a 33-year diplomatic career. His final posting was as Consul General to Hong Kong and Macau, an ambassadorial-level assignment. Ford now advises companies and institutions on Indo-Pacific geopolitics and contributes to the public debate on the region.

Ford was the National Security Council’s Director for China and Taiwan under President George W. Bush. He was Special Envoy for the Six-Party Talks on North Korean nuclear weapons, for which President Obama accorded him the personal rank of ambassador. At the Pentagon, Ford was foreign policy advisor (POLAD) to Chief of Naval Operations ADM Gary Roughead. In Baghdad, he was POLAD to the Commanding General of Multinational Corps-Iraq, LTG Lloyd Austin.

Ford is Senior Advisor to Bower Group Asia, a government relations consultancy. He sits on the advisory boards of the American Association of the Indo-Pacific and the European Cyber Diplomacy project. Ford is a regular speaker on foreign policy, including for events hosted by Goldman Sachs, Axiom Asia, Citibank, and Forsyth Barr.

Ford began his career in 1980 as a foreign/defense policy assistant to then Senator Joseph Biden.

Ford is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
