Human Capital Conference 2023: Bridging the Gap to Build a Future Ready Workforce

AmCham Singapore is proud to host our annual Human Capital Conference 2023.

Graced by Mr. Chan Chun Sing, Minister for Education, the conference will explore how businesses can strengthen partnerships with Singapore Government and Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) to meet the skills demand of a dynamic and uncertain environment.

The conference will feature a panel of C-Suite leaders who will dive into what is needed to bridge the skills gap, followed by facilitated tabletop discussions on the driving forces shaping the Human Capital world in the next few years – the role of policymakers in shaping and building future ready talent, the role of emerging technology in driving more efficient HR processes and systems, the role of evolving L&D initiatives in addressing skills gaps, and the role of organizations in building a more adaptable and resilient workforce.

We will also be sharing the results of AmCham's 11th annual Manpower Survey, so come and learn about major changes in workforce trends since last year, from work-pass approvals to the new Complementarity Assessment Framework (COMPASS).

Before the conference, we'll be hosting an optional Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Workshop* for those that are interested in discussing the skills that women leaders need in order to move to the next level.

After the conference, we'll also be hosting an optional Innovation Tour* for those that are interested in seeing more of the Medtronic Customer eXperience Center (MCXC).

John Antos heads the strategy function for Global Payroll and Asia-Pacific at ADP. He collaborates with the ADP Research Institute® and other partners on research into human capital management and the future of work, and how it is evolving in Asia’s dynamic business environment. He speaks on trends is AI, economics, innovation, and technology and how where these factors cross human capital management in the digital workplace.

Mr. Antos is based in Singapore and has spent several years covering the region from China and Hong Kong, to India and Australia. Mr. Antos career includes background in product innovation, fintech, HCM, consumer financial services, and corporate tax credits serving in leadership roles in marketing and strategy.

Mr Chan Chun Sing was appointed Singapore’s Minister for Education on 15 May 2021. He is also Minister-in-charge of the Public Service since 1 May 2018.

Mr Chan drove Singapore’s economic and industrial development as Minister for Trade and Industry (MTI) from 1 May 2018 to 14 May 2021. At MTI, he ratified the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership agreement, as well as deepened international cooperation on the digital economy. As Deputy Chairman of the People’s Association from 1 October 2015 to 14 May 2021, he oversaw national efforts to foster social cohesion.

From May 2015 to May 2018, he was Secretary-General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) and expanded the Labour Movement network to represent all working people in Singapore. Prior to NTUC, he served as Minister for Social and Family Development (2013-2015) and Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports (2011-12). He was also Second Minister for Defence (2013-15) and Minister of State for Information, Communications and the Arts (2011-12).

Serving with the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) from 1987 to 2011, Mr Chan held various appointments including Chief of Army. He left the SAF to run in the 2011 General Election and was elected Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar Group Representation Constituency.

An SAF (Overseas) and President’s Scholarship holder, he graduated with First Class Honours in Economics from Christ’s College, Cambridge University, UK. He was also awarded the 1998 Distinguished Master Strategist Award by the US Army Command and General Staff College. In 2005, he completed the Sloan Fellows Programme at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under the Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship.

Born in 1969, Mr Chan is married with three children and enjoys reading and jogging.

Dr. Hsien-Hsien Lei is Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of The American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Singapore — the largest and the most active international business association in Singapore and Southeast Asia, with over 6,000 members representing over 550 companies. Hsien is also Adjunct Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, member of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Advisory Board, member of the Singapore Institute of Directors MNC Committee, co-lead of the WorkWell Leaders SME Action Sub-Group, and on the organizing committee of the Precision Public Health Asia Conference.

Prior to AmCham, Hsien was Vice President, Medical and Scientific Affairs, Medtronic Asia Pacific, where she was responsible for the Medtronic Innovation Centers in Japan and Korea, training and education, and the company’s health systems transformation strategy in the region. Hsien has extensive experience in scientific affairs, corporate and healthcare communications, advertising, public relations and government affairs.

Hsien has lived and worked in the US, Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, UK, and is now based in Singapore. She holds a BA (with honors) in Human Biology from Stanford University and a PhD in Epidemiology from The Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health where she was the recipient of a US National Institutes of Health Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology Training Grant. Her doctoral thesis explored the genetic epidemiology of end-stage renal disease and type 2 diabetes. She completed her post-doctoral fellowship at National Taiwan University Hospital in the Department of Internal Medicine.

Elisa Mallis has accumulated 20 years of experience as a business leader with a focus on transformational change, human capital strategy, sales, and marketing. Currently, she is the APAC Managing Director and Vice President of the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL). In her role, she leads CCL's efforts in the region to accelerate leadership development while also contributing significantly to CCL's global research agenda.

Based in Asia over the last 14 years, Elisa has held substantial leadership roles, including at MDS (a Greater China-focused Leadership Firm), at the University of Maryland Robert H. Smith School of Business and Accenture.

CCL has been a member of AmCham Singapore for over ten years. With CCL's renewed investment and focus to bring East and West perspectives on Leadership, Elisa will be able to bring these latest Asia-focused human capital and leadership development best practices to support AmCham Singapore's growth and impact.

Norbert is the Vice President of Human Resources, Greater Asia, Becton Dickinson, a top five medical device company with the purpose of advancing the world of health by improving medical discovery, diagnostics and the delivery of care. Norbert has a diverse leadership experience of 9 years. Prior to BD, he was with Acelity, the world’s leading advanced wound care medical technology company, later acquired by 3M, as the Head of International Human Resources, Leading the HR function across Europe, Asia, Africa and Middle East regions for the full spectrum of commercial, manufacturing and back office (SSC) functions. Norbert was with Philip Morris International (80,000+ employees) for 10 years in various regional HR leadership, Talent, Learning and Sales Organisation Development. He spent 5 years as CHRO in JF Hillebrand Group, a midsize (1.5B EUR, 43 countries) Private Equity owned entrepreneurial service company. Norbert also spent 8+ years in various consulting roles with P&L responsibilities, as well as international projects.

Norbert has a track record in leading and supporting change at restructuring, M&A, business model, digital & culture change initiatives globally. He has led several HR transformation initiatives globally and locally transforming the function to modern, lean, agile HR via implementing digital learning, HR analytics and HRM cloud solutions. His motivation comes form driving change to stay ahead through people, technology, learning and passion.

Norbert holds a MBA degree from the London Business School, and a Masters in Economics from the Corvinus University of Budapest. He is a certified Change Management Consultant by the PWC London & British Know How Fund. He is certified in Korn Ferry Lominger Leadership & Interview Architect, competency Modelling & High Potential Identification (Choices) Learning Agility Assessment, and Organization Design by University of Southern California & PMI joint program.

Norbert has lived and worked in Hong Kong, Hungary, Singapore, Switzerland, Thailand, UK and USA.

In June 2021, Kaja took on the responsibility of Regional President for Organon Asia Pacific and Japan. Organon, created through a spinoff from Merck & Co. (also known as MSD outside of the U.S. and Canada), has a portfolio of over 60 medicines and solutions across a range of areas including reproductive health, heart disease and respiratory diseases. Organon’s main priority is to meet the health needs of women.

Through Kaja’s leadership in the Asia Pacific and Japan region, Organon will be working with a goal to put women at the center of its work, striving to listen and understand her healthcare needs, big and small, to ensure availability of medicines and other products that allow her to live a better and healthier every day.

Kaja has extensive experience in the biopharmaceutical industry and a strong track record in a wide range of markets and headquarter roles, including as Global Commercial Lead for Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases.

Kaja’s numerous country leadership roles include Managing Director of MSD Netherlands, where she led the Dutch organization to ensure sustainable access for patients to MSD’s innovative medicines.

Before moving to the Netherlands, Kaja was Managing Director for MSD in South Africa, managing Human Health operations in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Institutional Business in Africa (IBA). During her tenure as Managing Director, MSD became the fastest growing pharmaceutical company in South Africa – thanks to her strong commitment to employees and her work to expand access to medicines for patients.

Preceding South Africa, Kaja successfully led the commercial operations at MSD Russia, where she was responsible for distributors, business support, vaccines, supply chain and customer service as well as the pharmacy team.

Kaja joined MSD in 1996 in Norway as a medical representative, subsequently she held roles of increasing responsibility in sales, marketing and external affairs as well as Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa business operations. She holds a degree in Pharmacy from Oslo University College, Norway, and an Executive MBA from ECSP-EAP, Paris, France, and the Norwegian School of Management, Oslo, Norway.

Brian Tan is Regional President of Southeast Asia at Applied Materials, Inc. In this role, he oversees the company’s operations and strategy in the region while helping to build strategic

partnerships across the private and public sectors. Concurrently, Brian heads the Applied Global Services business in Asia where his strong product focus and customer relationships have driven service growth and built field service capabilities-infrastructure.

Brian began his career at Applied Materials in 2000 as a customer engineer and progressed through multiple technical, operational and sales leadership roles. He was previously Chief Strategy Officer for worldwide operations, as well as Head of Operations & Policy

Deployment for global continuous improvement. Brian was appointed Deputy Regional President for Southeast Asia in 2012 where he played an integral role in advancing key public-private partnership initiatives.

Brian was elected to the board of Singapore Semiconductor Industry Association (SSIA) in 2018 and appointed Vice Chairman in 2020. He serves on the advisory board of Future of Microelectronics Advisory Board under Research, Innovation and Enterprise (RIE) 2025.

Brian also serves on the Advisory Board of National University of Singapore’s College of Design and Engineering (NUS CDE) and School of Continuing and Lifelong Education (NUS SCALE).

Brian has a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering from the National University of Singapore.

Andrew Thomas has spent the last 40 years in communication, business growth, and leadership – over 35 years of this consulting with leading organizations across Asia.

Prior to leading Eagles Flight Asia, Andrew worked in the publishing arena, managing the business operations of the International Herald Tribune and Ogilvy WPP Group for 15 Years. Andrew is a passionate believer in the importance of the brand inside as a weapon to help shape resilient company cultures and dynamic, supportive, leadership styles.

He is accomplished at helping organizations translate their strategies to operational, lived, day to day behaviors. Andrew has led and facilitated cultural transformation engagements that have resulted in engaged and motivated employees delivering increased and sustainable business results. At Ogilvy / WPP Group, Andrew led a network that became the largest and most awarded Public Relations and Influence firm in Singapore and Southeast Asia region.

He is a frequent speaker at industry and business events and brings energy, humor, and insight when moderating conferences and panel discussions involving many senior political figures and business leaders from the region. Andrew is a master media, crisis, and presentation skills coach. He continues to counsel numerous CEOs and business leaders across the region helping them shape positioning, messaging, and storytelling relevant to their businesses.

He has coached senior executives for the likes of UBS, Monetary Authority of Singapore, Intel, UPS, PayPal, TATA, National Arts Council, and GIC to name a few. His experience spans both the public and private sectors. Andrew holds a master’s degree from the Macquarie Graduate School of Management. He is also a trained auctioneer and has auctioned some of Asia’s most valuable and sought after contemporary art.

Dr Zsuzsanna Tungli is an expert and passionate advocate of global and inclusive leadership, gender equality and cultural intelligence. Her work over the past 30 years has spanned Asia, US and Europe, in consulting, research as well as executive education. She has designed and run most of her programs as the Managing Partner of Developing Global Leaders but also as an invited faculty member at the following business schools: INSEAD, IMD, London Business School, University of St. Gallen, National University of Singapore and Singapore Management University.

She is the author of the books The Culture Key between Asia and the West (2020), and The Roadmap to Gender Equality in Organisations (forthcoming), and a regular speaker and facilitator at international conferences and company events. Zsuzsanna earned a PhD in international business at London Business School, UK, and an MBA at Bocconi University in Milan, Italy. With her first degree, she graduated as an economist from Corvinus University in Budapest, Hungary.
