AmCham Singapore is excited to host a debrief from the AmChams of Asia Pacific ("AAP") Washington DC Door Knock. A five-member AmCham Singapore delegation joined the AAP Washington DC Door Knock from July 16-19 to provide an on-the-ground perspective to key decision makers in the Administration and Congress, as well as leading think tanks, and to learn what is happening in the US and how it can impact business in Asia.

Key topics included what to expect this year from Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF), how the Presidential election may impact foreign policy, and what could occur under an "America First" Administration.

The delegation consisted of AAP Chair Steven Okun, AAP Door Knock Award Committee Chair Amy Jackson, Nate Bush, Tom Evrard and David Katz.

In addition to AAP delegation meetings, they also held specific discussions on Singapore with the Singapore Embassy, think tank experts and Department of Commerce officials.

The AmCham Door Knock team will debrief AmCham members on what the team learned and accomplished on the trip and next steps in terms of advocacy.

Steven Okun’s thirty-year career in public affairs includes leadership positions in government, business and industry associations.

Since 2017, he serves as a Senior Advisor to global geostrategic consultancy McLarty Associates working with multinational clients across the region. As KKR’s first Director of Asia Public Affairs from 2011-2017, his responsibilities encompassed government affairs, communications, stakeholder engagement, and sustainability. From 2003-2010, he created and led Asia public affairs for global logistics firm UPS.

Steve serves as Chair of the AmChams of Asia Pacific, the umbrella organization of American Chambers of Commerce that promotes trade and investment between the region and the United States and previously served four terms as a Governor for AmCham Singapore, including being elected three times as Chair.

Awarded a Special Service Commendation in the Clinton Administration, Steven served as Deputy General Counsel at the US Department of Transportation from 1994-1999.

A frequent analyst for global media, he also authors regular commentary and is the featured guest on Singapore’s MONEY FM International News Review.

A sought-after expert, he speaks frequently to businesses, investor groups, at universities and conferences across the region.

He received his B.A. from the University of Virginia and his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law.

Amy Jackson joined J&J as the Head of Government Affairs and Policy for Pharmaceuticals for the Asia Pacific region in October 2021. At J&J, she works with local, regional, and global teams to coordinate government affairs strategies and activities in individual Asian markets and across the region. Amy is currently a member of the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation Board of Directors and previously served as a Vice President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan for 5 years.

From January 2016-September 2021, Ms. Jackson was based in Tokyo and served as the Japan Representative for the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) association. For six years before that, Ms. Jackson was the President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea). Ms. Jackson was awarded an Industrial Service Medal by South Korean President Lee Myung-bak in 2012 and was inducted as an honorary citizen of Seoul in 2013.

Prior to joining AMCHAM Korea, Ms. Jackson was a Director at Crowell & Morning International, a trade and investment consulting firm based in Washington D.C. From 1998-2005, Ms. Jackson worked at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), first serving as the Director of Japanese Affairs and later as the Deputy Assistant USTR for Korea. Prior to that, Ms. Jackson worked in the International Relations Division at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Ms. Jackson served as a Mansfield Fellow (which included one year in intensive language training and one year working in her counterpart government agency in Japan) from 1995-1997.

Ms. Jackson has a master’s degree in International Relations from Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor’s degree in Government from Pomona College. She is married and has a teenager son and daughter and currently lives in Singapore.

Nate focuses on internal investigations, regulatory proceedings, compliance counseling, and disputes involving antitrust and competition, fraud and corruption, and international trade policy. He relocated from Washington, D.C. to Asia in 2004 in response to escalating enforcement of the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and domestic antitrust laws across the region.

He practiced in Beijing for 8 years through 2012, and now covers the region from DLA Piper’s Singapore office. He has advised conducted investigations throughout Asia, and he regularly advises clients on antitrust and compliance aspects of complex transactions in the region. He is experienced with the specific regulatory risks of diverse industries in Asia, including the technology, media, telecommunications, semiconductor, life sciences, oil and gas, mining, aviation, heavy manufacturing, and retail sectors.

Nate frequently publishes and speaks on competition, corruption, and trade policy issues in Asia, and co-authored the China chapter of the ABA treatise on Competition Laws Outside of the United States.

Nate is graduate of Harvard Law School and the University of Virginia. He was actively involved in legal policy issues at the American Chamber of Commerce in China, serving as Legal Committee Chairman in 2008 and as General Counsel from 2009 through 2011.

Tom Evrard is FTI Consulting’s Southeast Asia leader in Singapore, where he counsels clients across highly-regulated industries with a focus on energy and natural resources, financial services, industrials, fast-moving consumer goods (“FMCG”), technology and telecommunications. Tom played a pivotal role in establishing FTI Consulting’s footprint in Southeast Asia at a time when the strategic communications landscape was in its infancy.

Tom currently leads a team of consultants delivering advocacy and communications strategies that support companies’ commercial objectives in multiple Asian markets. He has successfully advised clients in navigating critical moments in the business life cycle, including corporate brand repositioning, litigation, market entry and transactions.

Drawing on decades of international experience, Tom provides distinctive solutions for complex issues and crises that often arise in a region as diverse as Southeast Asia where geopolitical and regulatory concerns are increasingly challenging. He is an industry leader in data-led strategy planning, multichannel activation, campaign execution and senior stakeholder engagement.

Tom is passionate about building end-to-end communications and public affairs campaigns, and has been seconded to lead such efforts in a range of organizations from global multinational corporations (“MNCs”) to newly established trade associations. He is a strong believer in innovation, collaboration and purpose-driven communications.

A committed industry player, Tom served on the inaugural Board of the Public Relations and Communications Association’s Asia Pacific Chapter. He currently sits on its Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

David Katz is Managing Director of Public Affairs for Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR) Asia Ltd. based in Singapore. David leads the corporate communications, government relations, corporate citizenship and environmental, social and governance (ESG) functions for KKR across markets in the Asia Pacific. David also sits on KKR’s Asia Pacific leadership team.

Previously he was the Deputy Head of Global Government Relations and Head of Asia Pacific Government Relations for PayPal Inc. and sat on PayPal’s Asia Pacific leadership team. Prior to PayPal Inc., he worked at eBay Inc., where he managed Asia Pacific GR for both eBay Marketplace and PayPal - then owned by eBay Inc. Before joining eBay, David worked at Visa Inc. where he served as their first head of GR for the Asia region.

David was also Chief of Party of a USAID program in the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Secretariat in Singapore, where he advanced policy and capacity building. David served in the Executive Office of the President for eight years as a Senior Director at the United States Trade Representative (USTR) with responsibility for Southeast Asia, APEC, China and Taiwan trade policy. Prior to USTR, David was an economic officer in the U.S. diplomatic service, with tours in Taiwan, Mongolia, and Singapore, and he was a special assistant to U.S. Secretaries of State Madeleine Albright and Colin Powell.

David earned an MBA from the University of Edinburgh and his BA from the University of California at Berkeley.
