During the COVID-19 pandemic, the power of public health has been on full display, but so has its fragility. We have seen a renewed appreciation for the value of public health strategies but at the same time, we witnessed far too many unnecessary deaths and hospitalizations. Dean Ellen Mackenzie visiting from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the first independent and largest graduate school of public health in the world, will make the case for sustained investment in public health and better coordination of resources across all levels of government and the private sector. We must learn from our lived experience and make the bold decision to invest in a modern public health system to secure the population's health so it can serve us well every day, not just in times of crisis.

Dr. Hsien-Hsien Lei is Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of The American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Singapore — the largest and the most active international business association in Singapore and Southeast Asia, with over 6,000 members representing over 600 companies. Hsien is also an Adjunct Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health.

Prior to AmCham, Hsien was Vice President, Medical and Scientific Affairs, Medtronic Asia Pacific, where she was responsible for the Medtronic Innovation Centers in Japan and Korea, training and education, and the company’s health systems transformation strategy in the region. Hsien also has extensive experience in corporate communications, advertising and promotion, and government affairs.

Hsien has lived and worked in the US, Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, UK, and is now based in Singapore. She holds a PhD in Epidemiology from The Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health where she was the recipient of a US National Institutes of Health Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology Training Grant. Her doctoral thesis explored the genetic epidemiology of end-stage renal disease and type 2 diabetes. She completed her post-doctoral fellowship at National Taiwan University Hospital in the Department of Internal Medicine. Hsien also holds a BA (with honors) in Human Biology from Stanford University.

Ellen J. MacKenzie is the 11th Dean of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the world’s oldest and largest independent school of public health. Dean MacKenzie leads an organization that includes 875 full-time faculty working in over 60 countries and teaching more than 3,500 students from 97 nations.

A leading injury prevention and trauma services research expert, Dean MacKenzie was named a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor in 2017, recognizing her interdisciplinary work in trauma care and rehabilitation. She founded the Major Extremity Trauma Research Consortium (METRC), a national network of more than 50 civilian and military trauma centers. She has held key leadership positions at the Bloomberg School including Chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management, Director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy and Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. She has joint appointments in the Department of Biostatistics and the School of Medicine’s departments of Orthopaedics, Physical Medicine Rehabilitation and Emergency Medicine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention named Dean MacKenzie one of 20 leaders and visionaries who have had a transformative effect on the field of violence and injury prevention in the past 20 years. In 2018, Dean MacKenzie was elected to the National Academy of Medicine. She has authored more than 240 publications.

Dean MacKenzie received a BA in Mathematics from Douglass College – Rutgers University and a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy from the Department of Biostatistics at the Bloomberg School.
