Join us for an exciting virtual discussion with Nirmal Ghosh, Former U.S. Bureau Chief of The Straits Times, Washington, D.C., Singapore's national broadsheet and newspaper of record.

Moderated by AmChamSG CEO Dr. Hsien-Hsien Lei, we will hear from Nirmal on his time based in Washington through different presidential administrations and how the political environment has changed (or stayed the same).

Nirmal will also share his thoughts on current affairs, including climate and sustainability, and how they will impact Singapore, the region and the world.

Nirmal is currently co-host of the Green Pulse and Asian Insider podcasts produced by The Straits Times and SPH Media Trust.

Dr. Hsien-Hsien Lei

Born in India of an Indian father and German mother, Nirmal Ghosh has had a 30-year career as a foreign correspondent for The Straits Times – in Manila, New Delhi, Bangkok and Washington DC – covering politics, conflict, disasters, international relations, and social and environmental issues across Asia and the United States.

Nirmal is a past President of the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand and Foreign Correspondents’ Association of the Philippines.

He has written five books, made films on wildlife, is on the Board of the Vienna-based Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime, and is a Trustee of The Corbett Foundation working in wildlife conservation in India. In 2021-22 his poetry installation Wild Cranes ran for six months at the Chinese American Museum in Washington DC, followed by a one week run in February 2022 at The Arts House in Singapore.

He has just retired and relocated to the region and is now focusing on co-hosting SPH Media’s Green Pulse and Asian Insider podcasts.

Dr. Hsien-Hsien Lei is Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of The American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Singapore — the largest and the most active international business association in Singapore and Southeast Asia representing over 650 companies. Hsien is also Adjunct Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, member of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Advisory Board, Vice President of the Precision Public Health Asia Society, board member of TalenTtrust, member of the United Women Singapore STEM Advisory Panel, and member of the 2023 FIRST Global Challenge host committee.

Prior to AmCham, Hsien was Vice President, Medical and Scientific Affairs, Medtronic Asia Pacific, where she was responsible for the Medtronic Innovation Centers in Japan and Korea, training and education, and the company’s health systems transformation strategy in the region. Hsien has extensive experience in scientific affairs, corporate and healthcare communications, advertising, public relations, and government affairs.

Hsien has lived and worked in the US, Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, UK, and is now based in Singapore. She holds a BA (with honors) in Human Biology from Stanford University and a PhD in Epidemiology from The Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health where she was the recipient of a US National Institutes of Health Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology Training Grant. Her doctoral thesis explored the genetic epidemiology of end-stage renal disease and type 2 diabetes. She completed her post-doctoral fellowship at National Taiwan University Hospital in the Department of Internal Medicine.
