Dr. Kanwaljit SoinF.A.M.S., M.B.B.S. (Hon), M. Med. (Surg), F.R.A.C.S. Orthopaedic & Hand Surgeon at Soin Orthopaedic, Spine & Hand Surgery Pte Ltd
Dr. Kanwaljit Soin is an Orthopaedic & Hand Surgeon in private practice. Her medical education was in Singapore at the National University of Singapore where she graduated top of her class in 1966 with MBBS (Hons) with medals for every subject. She then obtained further degrees from Australia and Singapore – FRACS and M.Med in Surgery. She was a Colombo Plan Scholar for hand surgery to Australia in 1971. She was the President of the Hand Society in 1989-1990. She was the President of the Singapore Orthopedic Association in 2014. In 2008 she received the Singapore Medical Association Merit Award in recognition of her significant contributions and valuable services to the community.
In addition to her full-time practice, she has founded various organizations to help the status of women and the less advantaged in society. She has also held numerous positions in welfare, advocacy and professional organizations.
She was a Nominated Member of Parliament of Singapore from 1992 – 1996. She was named one of the 30 people who have shaped Singapore in CNN Go's Power List in October 2010.
She was a founder member of AWARE “Association for Action & Research” in 1985 and served as its president from 1991 – 1993.
She was also a founder member of UNIFEM (Singapore) and the Association of Women Doctors. She served as the Chair of UNIFEM Singapore from 1997 to 2002. She was a member of a medical team under UNIFEM Singapore for 5 charity medical missions to Indonesia and Thailand in 1998 and 1999. She was the leader of a charity medical mission to East Timor in 2003.
She was a Jury Member of Selection Committee for the prestigious Rolex Awards for Enterprise in 2000 and 2004.
She was a past president of International Women’s Forum, Singapore from 2001 to 2003. In 2000 she was presented “Women Who Make a Difference Award” by the International Women’s Forum, Washington D.C.
She was the founder President of WINGS in Singapore – “Women’s Initiative for Ageing Successfully.” in 2006 and held the position till 2012.
Dr. Soin was recognized as an AWARE Heroine in 2012 for her vision and dynamic leadership in the formation and growth of WINGS.
She was also a Board Member of Washington University International Advisory Council for Asia from 2007 – 2016.
She was nominated “Woman of the Year” in 1992 in Singapore. In 2014 she was inducted into the Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame.
She is the author of a book published in 2018 entitled “Silver Shades of Grey – Memos for Successful Ageing in the 21st Century” and co-editor of “Our Lives to Live – Putting A Woman’s Face to Change in Singapore” in 2015.
