The Asia-Pacific, like other regions across the world, has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic and looks ahead to recovering from the effects of this global crisis. Experts acknowledge that recovery outlook will vary by country depending on infection rates and containment measures, roll-out of effective vaccination programs, policy responses, reliance on contact-intensive activities, and external demand. However, 2020 was also a great year for investors, with equity market benchmarks in the US hitting new highs, supported by strong earnings growth among tech stocks and pharmaceutical companies.

In 2021, with a new administration in place in the United States, what will the investment outlook for the Asia-Pacific region look like? Where will the recovery be and what will be the engine of growth needed?

Jansen Calamita is Head of Investment Law & Policy, Centre for International Law, and Research Associate Professor (CIL), Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore. He was previously Director of the Investment Treaty Forum at the British Institute of International and Comparative Law and has held posts at the University of Birmingham and the University of Oxford.

Prior to entering academics, Professor Calamita served in the Office of the Legal Adviser in the US Department of State (International Claims and Investment Disputes Division) and as a member of the UNCITRAL Secretariat. He began his career in private practice in New York. He holds a Juris Doctor magna cum laude (Boston) and a Bachelor of Civil Law (Oxford). He is co-editor (with L Malintoppi) of International Litigation in Practice (Brill) and a member of the editorial board of the Yearbook of International Law and Policy (Oxford University Press). He continues to advise governments on matters relating to international investment and dispute resolution.

Sumaira joined Citi in April 2019 to assume her current role as Regional Head of Wealth Advisory. In her role, Sumaira is responsible for delivering holistic wealth advice across Investments, Insurance, FX and Deposits, supported by best-inclass Citi Research and Insights, as well as world-leading digital wealth and financial planning capabilities. She has over 22 years of experience in investment sales, business development, wealth management and private banking, as well as digital wealth management.

Prior to joining Citi, Sumaira was the Global Head of Digital Wealth Solutions at HSBC, where she was responsible for driving significant wealth market growth and cost savings through the successful deployment and commercialization of E2E wealth digital solutions.

Sumaira has a Bachelor of Science with Honors from The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). She is also a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and Certified Life Underwriter(CLU), and joined the Institute of Financial Advisers in 2004 as a member.

Dr William Thomas is the Director of the Economist Corporate Network in Southeast Asia. An experienced advisor to senior business and government leaders, he helps organisations understand the strategic, operational, and talent implications of geopolitical changes.

He holds a PhD in public policy from George Mason University in the US, as well as a degree in economics from the University of Virginia and an MBA. His academic research has focused on managing change in large, multinational organisations, with an emphasis on organisational culture.

William is a retired United States Air Force lieutenant colonel, having spent much of his 21-year military career as a strategic planner for complex operations such as humanitarian assistance and counterterrorism. He was Associate Professor of Political Science at the US Air Force Academy, and later taught at Georgetown University in Washington DC and as a Fulbright Scholar at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Having worked throughout Asia since 2012, he has focused on leadership development and organisational change as a consultant, leadership coach, and training facilitator, and has been based in Bangkok and Manila in addition to Singapore.
