Event Details

India, the world's largest democracy, prepares for its next general election which will take place from April 19 to June 1, 2024. Although Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party is set to easily win a majority in the country's Parliament, the opposition has managed to form a unified coalition which may potentially reduce PM Modi's seat share and shift India's political and economic trajectory for the next five years.

Known for populist and expansionary fiscal policies, businesses can expect more state-led development initiatives under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This poses numerous opportunities, including in the areas of:

  • Infrastructure: Plans for investments in areas such as energy, transportation, and digital connectivity and how that will unlock new market opportunities.
  • Social welfare programs: The focus on affordable healthcare and education and how that will affect spending patterns and potentially create new market segments.
  • Foreign relations: The chosen government's stance towards international trade deals and what that would mean for export opportunities and import regulations.

However, there are challenges to India's stability and unity, such as the BJP's nationalist agenda and its impact on Hindu-Muslim relations . Additionally, despite being the most populous country, India has a high unemployment and underemployment rate. Bridging the skills gap while sustaining economic growth in its critical sectors is a pressing challenge for India to address.

Join AmCham for an in-person dialogue as we hear from key experts on the upcoming legislative election and its impact on the country's business outlook, foreign policy, and public policy priorities and India's transformation from a balancing power to a leading one.
