The integration of digital technologies into the social, political and economic processes of the world has revolutionized the way we operate, from day-to-day individual tasks to wide-reaching government and corporate decisions. For businesses, there is a growing gulf between the state of current technology and the state of business preparedness to adapt to new technologies. One significant concern is whether companies are effectively protecting themselves against new and advanced cybercrime tech, which carries massive security and business risks.
The growth of quantum technology is one such risk to business operations. Current computing is unable to combat the potential weaponization of quantum technology, which is far more powerful than the former because of its radically faster data processing time. Quantum technology can render current data cryptography methods obsolete, particularly hashing algorithms which are commonly used across industries worldwide to store private data. The encryption methods used by industry can be easily broken within hours and even minutes with quantum computing. Additionally, with the advancement in quantum technology, there is also an upward trend in "Harvest now, decrypt later" (HNDL) attacks, which allows the stolen information of today to be decrypted and used maliciously years later.
Other challenges arise with emerging technologies. These include issues of national security and interstate cyberattacks, a widening of the global "digital divide" in access to computational power, and vulnerabilities in blockchain security. It is critical that individuals, businesses, and countries adequately prepare themselves for the ever-increasing risks of cyberspace. Solutions should be implemented from beginning to end of a company's cyber processes. This can be done through the implementation of security infrastructure, risk assessments, insurance, threat detection methods, and mechanisms for swift response.
