Climate change poses severe risks to businesses, particularly in ASEAN where it is projected to lead to a staggering 35% loss in GDP by 2050. These losses includes but is not limited to physical loss from natural disasters, health loss due to a rise in diseases, economic loss due to supply chain disruptions and energy issues, and more. With regulators pushing corporates to transition to net-zero and imposing increasingly stringent taxes and disclosure requirements for transition plans, understanding the risks to their business and developing a transition plan is a critical priority for corporates. AmChamSG's new transition series is designed to help businesses develop strategic plans for a smooth transition to the green economy while leveraging emerging opportunities.
This first session will focus on evaluating transition risks for businesses, particularly the four categorized by the G20's Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures - policy, technology, market, and reputational risk. Measures like carbon reduction goals, green investments, and energy efficiency are crucial for driving change, but come with risks that must be identified, assessed, and mitigated. For example, carbon taxes hit high-carbon firms with litigation and compliance costs, outdated infrastructure may become obsolete due to new low-carbon technologies, extreme temperatures cause volatile commodity prices, and shifting consumer preferences raise further uncertainty. The failure to decarbonize can result in loss of market share, decreased revenue, and carbon-asset depreciation and stranding as competitors adapt.
Join AmChamSG and our panel of experts as we explore the spectrum of climate risks that businesses must prepare for and practical strategies and use cases on assessing and mitigating these risks while translating them into business opportunities.
