[In-Person] COP27 Summit: Reflections

Event Details

According to the IMF Climate Change Indicators Dashboard, annual global greenhouse gas emissions has rebounded last year to a new record and eclipsed the pre-pandemic peak, with the manufacturing and energy sector being the biggest contributors. COP27 will be focusing on three key areas – Reducing emissions; Helping countries prepare for and deal with climate change; and Securing technical support and funding for developing countries. It will lay out critical next steps to pressing issues such as climate finance, sustainability, public-private cooperation, and innovative technologies.

With COP27's strong emphasis on moving from negotiation to execution, it is imperative that businesses adapt and take advantage of the momentum to implement climate solutions. With financing being a stickler point in COP26, climate financing is also expected to be a major focus this year.

Dr Aisha Al-Sarihi is currently a research fellow at the Middle East Institute of the National University of Singapore. Dr Al-Sarihi’s areas of research expertise and interest include clean energy policy and climate economics, policies and governance, with a focus on the Arab region and Middle East-Asia relations. Following her PhD, from 2016 to 2017, she was a research officer at the London School of Economics and Political Science’s Middle East Centre. She was also a former visiting scholar at Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington (2017) and Georgetown University’s Center for Contemporary Arab Studies (2018). Before joining MEI, Dr Al-Sarihi was a research associate in the Climate and Environment Program at King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC) from 2019 to 2021. She holds a PhD from the Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial College London and a MSc and a BSc, with distinction, in environmental science from Sultan Qaboos University.

David Ding is an innovation leader, problem solver, start-up hustler, lean start-up practitioner and ecosystem developer. He has led numerous Business & Partnership Development efforts and validated business models that attracted angels and institutional funding across IT solutions, gaming, e-commerce, big data, social media and healthcare in Singapore, China & USA. In the past decade, he has been focusing on Southeast Asia Start-up Ecosystem and Innovation Ecosystem development.

Prior to joining DBS Innovation, David was the Community and Operations Manager at muru-D Singapore, a start-up accelerator programme backed by Telstra. He was among the 20 delegates of 2017's inaugural Australia-Vietnam Young Leadership Dialogue. David is presently serving as the President of NUS Overseas Colleges Alumni Executive Committee.

Stéphanie Groen is ERM’s Partner Low Carbon Economy Transition for South & Southeast Asia. She leads the development and growth of low carbon transition and climate change practices, as well as technical due diligence for clients across industries in the region.

With over 20 years’ professional experience in water, marine and environmental consultancy, Stéphanie has successfully driven numerous transition projects, focusing on climate change resilience, technical due diligence, environment, water and infrastructure development. She has also led in more than 15 large-scale marine infrastructure developments related to land reclamation works and port developments, whilst working closely with institutions such as the Singapore Government and Multilateral Development Banks, as well as design engineering firms, universities and insurance companies. Her clients are largely in Asia, particularly in Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Prior to joining ERM, she was with design engineering firm Aurecon and before that with environmental consultant DHI Singapore. Stéphanie has strong domain knowledge about environmental monitoring and management plans (EMMP) related to land reclamation and marine infrastructure developments, biodiversity assessments, physical climate change resilience plans (coastal and inland), dredging and reclamation activities and feasibility studies for renewable energy (hydropower, tidal power, wind, floating solar).

With her in-depth technical and consultancy experiences, Stéphanie is able to lend insights on material climate actions, and environmental best practices to drive positive, lasting outcomes.

Mr Jian Wei HENG is the Director of Policy at the National Climate Change Secretariat – Strategy Group (SG-NCCS) under the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). He leads policy efforts across the Singapore Government to develop and implement Singapore’s response to climate change, and advance our interests on the international stage.

Prior to joining SG-NCCS, he has held appointments in various ministries such as the Ministry of Manpower, Communications Group under the PMO, the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of National Development. Jian Wei has experience in a range of domain areas including manpower programmes and policies, industry development strategies and housing policies. He has bachelor’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Economics from UC Berkeley, and a master’s degree in Economics from the London School of Economics.
