Internship Programs: Fostering Future Ready Talent

Interns are a valuable support for any business. Interns can contribute fresh perspectives on organizational issues, offer additional help on larger projects and become brand advocates. Hiring interns is also an impactful way for businesses to contribute to the community by providing opportunities for students to develop practical skills and gain work experience. While many well-known internship programs are from large, multinational companies, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can also benefit from integrating interns into their workforce and even create a pipeline of talent that eventually contribute as full-time employees.

However, SMEs face several challenges in engaging interns. Cost is a major concern, along with competition with other businesses of various sizes and reputation for the same pool of talent. Another challenge is effectively promoting their internship roles to students and higher education institutions. SMEs can overcome these challenges by building good internship programs and developing partnerships with education institutions.

Arian founded Jobkast, an internship platform for high-potential university students, after building her 17-year career in workforce development, witnessing the power of internships in shaping the future of work. Before founding Jobkast, Arian headed J.P. Morgan’s workforce development efforts across Asia Pacific where she funded multi-million dollar projects to help upskill and place underserved young people in quality employment. Before joining J.P. Morgan, Arian managed Fung Global Institute’s research on Asian finance, supply chains, governance, and sustainability. Prior to moving to Hong Kong in 2013, she oversaw UNESCO’s multi-donor International Fund for Cultural Diversity in Paris where she funded job creation programs across 40 developing countries worldwide.

Arian started her career in the media and global communications investment banking team at Merrill Lynch in New York. She holds a Master’s in Public Administration in International Development from Harvard Kennedy School, and a Bachelor’s in economics and German studies from Brown University, where she was awarded a Fulbright scholarship.

Yasi is the Senior Assistant Director of the Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IIE) at the Singapore Management University (SMU). In her role, she oversees the education portfolio under the Innovation Academy and advises the biennial Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan Competition.

Before SMU, Yasi headed the Internationalisation Unit and taught GCE ‘A’ Levels General Paper in Hwa Chong Institution (HCI). She led the prestigious annual Hwa Chong Asia-Pacific Young Leaders Summit where she discovered her deep interest in the development of holistic and experiential learning opportunities pivotal in character and leadership development. Yasi was also instrumental in the designing of the curriculum for Social Economic Studies, a new humanities subject. She was previously awarded the HCI Innovative Teaching Practices Awards and the NIE-ExxonMobil Caring Teacher Award.

Yasi loves travelling and learning new things. Her passion for exploration and learning led her to pursue a career with IIE. Beyond the office, she served as a coach in the Clinked Leadership Coaching Workshop and engaged in various volunteer projects in Surabaya and Cambodia.

Yasi holds a Master of Education (International Education Policy Program) from the Harvard University, a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the National Institute of Education and a Bachelor of Arts in English Language from the National University of Singapore. She was a recipient of the Tan Ean Kiam Postgraduate Scholarship.

Jeff Paine is the Managing Director of Public Sector (PS) Engage which aims to help organizations build better relationships with their regulators, have more impact in the communities they operate in, and develop partnerships to help realize exponential gains in their core business activities. Prior to establishing PS Engage, Jeff was the Head of Government Relations for Southeast Asia for Visa Inc. In this capacity he is responsible for developing constructive engagement activities to develop and maintain relationships with public sector professionals in ASEAN.

Prior to working with Visa, Jeff Paine worked at Microsoft as Director of Public Sector Partner Business where he was responsible for driving revenue via the Microsoft partner ecosystem that supported governments across Asia Pacific. While at Microsoft, Jeff successfully managed multi regional projects for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and spearheaded the implementation of Microsoft’s global Government Engagement efforts in Asia. He also led Microsoft’s public sector team in the development on an innovative executive program for government leaders, academics and Microsoft executives in partnership with the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore in Singapore.

Prior to joining Microsoft, Jeff was Director of Business Development for Central Asia Development Group (CADG), a private development organization involved in the implementation of infrastructure, agriculture, and economic development projects in Afghanistan and which partners with various agencies such as USAID, World Bank, UN agencies, and other donors.

JC Sekar is the Co-founder and CEO of AcuiZen Technologies, a Singapore-founded technology venture. AcuiZen is a digital application that tackles two critical challenges of our times: Digitalization & Upskilling of workforce

JC is an MBA alumnus of National University of Singapore and holds a Masters in Technology (Aerospace) from IIT Madras, India. He has over three decades of experience working with and leading teams across geographies and sectors in Design, Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, Information Technology, Assessments, Learning & Development, Business Development and Operations. His most recent corporate experience was as Managing Director (Asia Pacific and Middle East) for the Health & Safety practice of the 125+ year old U.S. based Safety Science Organization: Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL).
